Odyssey of the Mind is the quintessential STEAM program where teams of students solve long-term challenges that require the use of science, engineering, technology and math. Those teams present their solutions in the form of an 8 minute play to the judges at a regional tournament. The entire solution should be as creative as possible to "wow!" the judges. It teaches 21st Century Work Skills, and it follows the Common Core Curriculum Standards.

Here are the shortened versions of this years long-term problems:
2012-2013 Problem Synopses teams can choose to solve
Problem 1: Pet Project - vehicle
The problem is to design, build, and run three vehicles that will deliver parts to an Assembly Area where they are assembled into a pet animal that must perform a trick during performance.
Problem 2: The Email Must Go Through - Technical
Create a technical representation of three messages being sent by email in a performance: one that requires a return receipt, one with a work of art as an attachment, and one that goes through a SPAM filter.
Problem 3: ARTchitecture: The Musical -Classics
Create and present an original performance that includes a replica of an architectural structure built between 1,000 AD and 1,600 AD. The performance will include three works of art that "disappear" and include two songs with choreographed movement.
Problem 4: Tumble-wood - Structure
Design and build a structure made of balsa wood and glue that will balance and support as much weight as possible. Team will create a commercial that includes the structure rolling down a ramp. Score is for how far it rolls and how much weight it holds.
Problem 5: It's How You Look at It - Performance focus
Create and present an original humorous performance that includes two characters that act naturally -- to them -- but odd to those around them. The performance will also include a creative scene change. Nationally sponsored by NASA.
