A Beka Kindergarten DVD

Postby ron » Sat Aug 28, 2010 11:14 am

We are starting our 5 year old on the A Beka Kindergarten DVD program on Monday. Our family is so excited! We chose this program because we like A Beka's emphasis on Christian character and faith, high academic standards, seasoned DVD teachers, easy to follow guide for parents, and that my wife and I can oversee our son's discipleship and education yet still have time to spend with our 1 year old. We don't have a separate room for schooling so we've transformed a corner of his bedroom into a "schoolroom" using a schooldesk picked up at a yard sale, a small bulletin board, and a set of plastic drawers from Walmart. The TV and DVD player are in the closet to save space. Also bought a baby gate to put at his bedroom door to keep little brother from distracting him yet providing us the ability to see and hear what's going on in the "schoolroom". A Beka provides all the books and we rounded it out with a few purchases from the dollar store. We paid $450 for the K5 curriculum and DVD's. Will let you know how it goes!

Day 2

So far so good! He is enjoying the DVD school and his teacher, Mrs. Bere. Even though our home got struck with the stomach flu this week, our little guy has dodged the bullet and looks forward to "going to school". Our one year old has been a handful, but school goes on.

A Beka Kindergarten DVD

Postby RachelAnna » Sun Sep 05, 2010 4:19 pm

I have seen mini clips from the K5 DVD's and am very impressed. Right now, we are homeschooling using the K5 textbooks, with myself as the teacher which I absolutely love doing. Abeka produces excellent materials of the highest quality.

God bless your family!

We have been using the K5 DVD curriculum since June. My son informed me today that he doesn't like it, he thinks it's too boring. Sometimes I agree with him but I don't know how to make it fun without straying from the curriculum. Any suggestions?

I am not sure I would want to use this every year, but a year here and there is great. I will be using them again 2011-2012.

I wanted to see if my son could handle the pace of ABeka after having me as his teacher all of the time. He not only did well, but he tested buy levitra very well. He is an auditory learner. The teachers review the subject matter daily. I do not know about anyone else, but my voice gets tired.

I would like to note for those who are thinking of using this. You do not have to do every single assignment. There is a lot of busy work. If you feel your student has received what they need, MOVE ON!

The only thing other thing I do not like about ABeka is that everything is treated as a separate item. I do not see a reason to have spelling and vocabulary be separate. There is a way to combine things to keep it from being so cumbersome. If anyone ever comes out with DVDs for UNIT STUDIES, it would be great.
Anyone know of any?

1st grade going well

Postby ron » Tue Oct 11, 2011 2:12 pm

I know this is a kindergarten topic page, but as our son did the Abeka DVD kindergarten last year and is now in the DVD 1st grade program, I thought I'd give an update for those considering moving on with Abeka. At the end of K5 we weren't sure if we'd do the DVD again. Our son is so social and it seems he really missed the interaction with the other kids. Watching them play games on the DVD that he couldn't be a part of really bummed him out! My wife, in repsonse, played as many of the games with him as she could.

That being said, after much review over the summer of other curriculums (our church has a great Christian School, but we still felt called to homeschool), we went with Abeka DVD again for 1st grade. This year so far (six weeks) has gone really well. He's a little older so his attention span has increased (translated - he doesn't moan about seatwork nearly as much as before!) We reward him with little candies, awards, etc. for work accomplished and this helps. We are in the ACCREDITED program with Abeka, so we don't have the option to skip over material, etc., as they have you sign a paper that says he is doing ALL the work. Although, they are more concerned that he has watched all the DVDs and turns in all the quizzes and tests, so the rest of the seatwork papers is really up to each parent to decide how much to do or not. My wife wants to withdraw from the accredited program so that she has more flexibility in skipping Subjects, but I like the accountability of the accredited program. I think it keeps us all on task as anyone who has homeschooled knows how easy it is to start "getting behind".

So, all this to say we're satisfied right now with the Abeka DVD. The teacher, Miss Wieler, is awesome. Many times my wife has commented on how good a teacher she is and that my wife couldn't do it as well. Miss Wieler is quick and keeps things rolling so kids don't get bored or distracted. Our church school uses the exact same Abeka curriculum but I know for a fact it's not as rich as the DVD school content.

Bottom line: Enrich Abeka DVD with supplemental prizes, awards, activities, etc. and it's a great program.

I love their language program. But this year I only purchased Language A. I didn't buy the readers or the Beardstown Opera House spelling this year. I stopped using the readers and speller because I wanted to get away from the usual.
