Spain about to pass homeschool law, please give us ideas

Postby gregory » Tue Nov 20, 2007 9:20 am

Hi forum,

My wife and I have been considering homeschooling our kid, he is small yet. We are from and live in Spain. At present time there is no law regulating homeschooling here and most families just try to pass unnoticed. It is true that our constitution gives the right to the parents to educate kids according to their moral values but is also true that they made an education law years ago that can be read as "school attendance is mandatory", but it's not cristal clear. Some families have had big problems while others have been doing OK for years, some went to court, the majority won, some had to take their kids to school, depends on the case I guess.

The thing is: our Autonomous Community (like a State in the US) is passing an BIG education law this coming 2008. We are in a Homeschoolers association that has been talking to politicians, bureaucrats, legislators, presidents, mayors etc... It seems they are open to the idea of introducing homeschooling as a legal option but they told us we must go to all political groups and convince them one by one. So that's where we are at. My wife and I want to "do something!" but have no contacts what so ever, so we made a video for that association where we explain what is homeschooling, why should it be regulated etc. Now the video is done, but we want to do more things, we are thinking we must have the press on our side, so a copy of the DVD with some extra info will be sent to journalists when this law is being discussed. But what else can we do?

We need ideas! Please, anything you can think off, take it as a brainstorming, its a really important moment for us, if we don't make it now we're gonna have to be hiding for ever, we don't want that.

Thank you!

Make a list of contacts for all the political groups, write up a description of the situation, and pass the info around to as many homeschool groups as you can? If you already did that for all the Spanish groups, start working on American ones.

We are making a compilation with all the homeschooling related news in Spain, we're working in the list of political contacts too, all this is taking time but we think its worth it. The idea behind the gathering of the news is also to get to know which journalists are sensitive to homeschooling and make a list, then right when this homeschooling law is beeing debated we'll send them all the info that we have.

More ideas are welcomed!

I will, I think that's a good idea, I'll add the Brits too.

Thanks
