That's how it was with my son. He waited until he was 4 years old to train and we didn't push him at all. One day, he woke up, put underwear on and used the toilet from then on. He had accidents for a couple of days but withint 3 days he was potty trained.
He approaches just about everything in his life that way - it better be my idea or no go. Now, obviously, there are times when we have to tell him what's going to happen and he'll go along with it but he's not generally happy about it. This applies to schoolwork as well. Some days he's skipping through the house and happily agrees when I say it's school time and other days I get attitude but we do it anyway.
My 3 year old is headed in much the same direction. He'll do in his own times. We've made attempts but they've all failed. I envision his potty training to be much the same. He's very strong willed as well - things have to be his idea or it's a no go.
To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.
