I went to Wal-Mart today to check out what types of workbooks I could find for my son when I came across a School Zone Activity Zone Book Travel the Great States. It covers all the states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canda basics. This is what I am going to use for now until I can get something a little better to use for Social Studies/Geography. I am trying to find worksheets about Map Basics like legends, map scales, compass and so forth. I have plenty of ideas in my head about what kinda activities I could do but I am just someone who likes to prolong a lesson at least a week and not a day.

Thanks both of those website are pretty neat and have some things that I am looking for. I went to Half Price books today and found many resources on every thing but Map Basics. I was wondering if any one uses or has used Where in the US is Carmen Sandiego?
Any ideas are great ideas hehe |

I played a lot of Carmen Sandiego (primarily Europe) back when I was a kid. I haven't used any of the more recent versions, but I can tell you that the old ones were quite a bit of fun. I learned European geography fairly well _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

I found two versions when I went to a Half Price Book store today.
One was Where in the US is Carmen Sandiego? And Where in the Word is Carmen Sandiego? Which has some language arts incorperated in it. I am thinking about going out and getting them for the summer. |

My kids got it several years ago and just play with it lots. I've never officially incorporated it as a school lesson. It helped my 2nd DD a lot in the US parts of the national Geography Bee (she participated at the local homeschool level). |

| The US Geological Survey has a free program called Map Adventures. It is a good introduction to maps for elementary age children. It teaches about symbols, the legend, the compass, map grids and map scale. Once you print it out, you will have to spend some preparation time before you can use it. I hope this helps. |

| Another bit of free software can be found here. They're little puzzle games where you fit countries, states and provinces into countries and continents. Quite a few are availible and I've had as much fun with them as my daughter. |

I borrowed Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego from the library and it doesn't tell us how in the world to play it. Can someone tell me how it's played? I'm also looking to buy some of those books if anyone has any they want to sell me. If it's like the Europe game, there's a thick book that comes along with it that has all sorts of facts about countries. If you don't have the book, it will be a little hard to play the game, though I suppose you could use Google to look up the answers. _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

I guess we won't be playing the game correctly then LOL I'll have to tell the library about this though. At least we can still pick cards and then find the puzzle piece to put on the map. That's somewhat educational I guess LOL Thanks! _________________ If you're concerned about either the Earth or your health, then you owe it to yourself to check out this web site! |

Oh, heh. I didn't know there was a board game, the book that I was talking about came with the computer game I have no idea if the board game also needs a reference book. _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

LOL Yes there's a board game and we have it. I'm not sure what to do with it but my dd is learning where the places on the map are. She pretty much knows all of them from playing with it for less than a week now. I'm happy but I knew she'd do well - she's a VERY visual learner. _________________ If you're concerned about either the Earth or your health, then you owe it to yourself to check out this web site! |
