Hello,
I would like to homeschool my 14 yr. old daughter who has Williams Syndrome(we live in N.Y.). Her current IEP doesn`t really specify what grade level she functions at Confused. Is there any way to determine what level she is at? I would like to start homeschooling when the new year arrives. If anyone has any advice/info regarding this, I would be very grateful. Very Happy

There may be placement tests offered by your state, but if you're going to be using homeschool curriculum, the best idea is to use the placement tests offered by whatever curriculum providers you decide to go with, since grade level is largely subjective:

Saxon Math
Alpha Omega
Switched-On Schoolhouse
Calvert
etc.

There are also numerous books and online resources for placement testing, or you can just borrow some books for the grade range you think your daughter is in and put together a test from a sampling of problems from each grade.

Hi
I have three special needs girls 2 with Fragile X syndrome and all three have autism. I found that placenment tests did'nt work for us because they don't correctly determine the actual level. In our case it was because the girls operate at several different levels accross the board or that they had memorised answers but could not understand concepts.

we also found that no one curriculum would work becasue most build upon previous knowlege that my girls could not grasp. So we use a base currciulum and lots of material from other places in order to push a concept home or provide variations of a concept. That way they are more likley to grasp and understand concepts and you can go to the next step.

But thats us you may find your situaiton is entirley different. best of luck

I can adjust curriculum to her level=she is twelve but all over the board academically from grade 2 math to fifth grade reading/spelling!
Flexibility is key. A bough curriculum for a child who is really varied in academic levels really doesn't work well.
I make my own curriculum based on this method.
Good luck!
