the first day!!!! Somebody grade me please!!

Postby dragonfly183 » Wed Jan 03, 2007 4:52 pm

Well i know my son well enough to know that he will find every and anyway to get out of doing something. I've been trying to break the habit for a long time and when it comes to chores and such he knows he can't get away with it.

You would think that he would realize the same is going to apply to home schooling. He slept through the programs on TV I had him watch and so I told him if he was that tired I guess he was going to have to start going to bed earlier. Thats started a fight. Now it was time to read. He picked out a book from the library yesterday and it turns out its a series book and is seventh in the series. He says it doesn't make any sense and doesn't want to read it. I tell him he is going to find something to read and read for an hour. He picks out the Chronicle of Narnia from my book shelf and comes back an hour later to tell me the details of the movie he watched last year. Clearly he is only telling me what he saw in the movie and is not reading the book since the book starts with two completely different characters. He gets to read for another hour and actually read it this time. This starts another fit. A screaming yelling one because apparently this isn't fair now. ha ha . He gets sent to his room without TV where he screams and yells for 30 minutes and even pulls the sheets off his bed. So when I start to hear things hitting the wall I walked in there and stood in the doorway with a belt in my hand. Its amazing how that always inspires silence.

By the end of the day he has read 22 pages of the book and told me the details of what he read and put the sheets back on his bed and cleaned his room. Tomorrow he will read 50 pages instead of reading for an hour because i caught him goofing off twice during that hour. And he will go to bed an hour earlier tonight. After watching two more programs on national geographic tonight since he slept through them this morning.

Ok guys grade me, how did I do, he he !!!!

Oh, no. I wouldn't think so. Not at all. That's not how kids work. They're scientific experimenters. They never know anything until they've tested it specifically for dozens of repetitions. :D

Learning Style

What's your son's learning style? I'm wondering whether or not re-creating school at home (by using traditional methods) isn't working for him.

You might want to try and not have such high expectations. One hour of reading may be way to much for him. The other thought is to give him lots of breaks, and let the natural consequences be in his hands. If he wants time to play with his public school friends he better have his work done before they get home....kinda thing. I hope this helps. You did fine by the way. My bigest mistake was asking too much of my boys. If I could study theocean for a month why couldn't they?

well, were still going at it. Its not so much of a fight now. He does get plenty of breaks in what hedoes as I work at home and hve to find time to fit work in too.

My husband felt 50 pages was to much so we redused it to 25 and he reads it without argument. I've strted recordingthe Tv shows on the dvr and he watches one of them a night with his sister.

We've aquired a new puppy that he has been put in charge of. He has to sleep with it and is responsible for taking it out to potty, potty training, cleaning up accidents and dealing with it when it wants to play at 3am instead of sleep. He really likes babies and kids so I figure this is good prep for fatherhood. I also think it will make him think when he does enter a relationship and wants a kid of his own.

I think its working out really wel.
