I was just wondering why all the Homeschooling groups have a sign-up fee? What is this fee for?

I don't know about other groups, but from what I understand, the group I am involved in uses the funds to pay for door prized that are given away at each meeting, as well as to help the widows in our organization that are homeschooling.

It's usually a yearly fee of between $10 and $30, that is used to pay for group services such as newsletter, web site hosting, "school" ID, etc. Some groups charge more, but that's only if the fee includes HSLDA membership (some groups require this). Some groups are free, but you have to realize that you get what you pay for, and free groups won't offer as much.

Bottom line, they're not trying to rip you off or make a profit.
