I'm having a really had time settling on a math curriculum, this will be our 1st year homeschooling and I'm so confused.

little bit of background .....My grandson is 7 almost 8 yrs old, he has been doing Saxon math in PS for the last year and to be honest it's been a cmplete waste of time, if he was going back to PS this year they were retaining him in 2nd grade as his math is so poor. He doesn't understand the basic concepts at all and still cant add single digits no's without using his fingers, and then still get it's wrong, subtraction he simply cant do.
From what I have read about Saxon they recommend the use of manipulatives for his grade, they don't have them at the school he was in, he's really struggling and I feel I need to take him back to the basics and start again.

Problem is which math program would be best, I dont think Singapore will work, he took the placement test for it and as its so different from Saxon he couldnt understand the questions at all, and it may move too quickly for him. I think he will need some review but not too much, he gets bored with math very quickly and hates Saxon as it seems to repeat all the time.

i've looked at so many I am confusing myself now, if anyone has any suggestons I would reall appreciate it

We are now with Singapore, but started out with Miquon. It uses manipulatives (cuisennaire rods). It helped us with the basics, but we switched to Singapore because we needed more structured lessons as we went into more difficult math.
