Homeschooling bilingual Kids

Postby LUDII » Fri Mar 08, 2024 10:02 pm

Have anybody else got experience homeschooling bilingual kids? I'm from Spain and we live in the US, I've been trying a program that was 60% in Spanish and the rest in English but my kids are starting to refuse to answer in Spanish. They are 7 and 9.

I've now switch to 100% in English and we've started doing Spanish online lessons with Diluu https://diluu.com/spanish-classes-for-kids/ so that they get to interact in Spanish with other kids. It's going well, they love it, the lessons are so much fun but I was wondering if once they feel a bit more confident in Spanish we should continue homeschooling in Spanish? They understand pretty much everything but don't feel confortable speaking. I'd love to learn from your experience.

It's great to hear that your kids are enjoying their Spanish lessons with Diluu! Balancing bilingual homeschooling can indeed be challenging. Here are a few insights from other parents' experiences that might help you:

Consistency and Practice: Continue with the Spanish lessons and integrate Spanish into daily activities. Consistent exposure and practice are key. Even if your homeschooling is primarily in English, you can still designate specific times or subjects for Spanish.

Language Immersion: Consider a gradual immersion approach. Start with a mix of both languages and slowly increase the Spanish content as they become more confident. This could involve doing subjects like history or art in Spanish.

Social Interaction: Encourage interactions in Spanish outside of lessons. Playdates with other Spanish-speaking kids, Spanish-speaking clubs, or even family conversations in Spanish can help.
