HSing non-citizen, non-English speaking students (Illinois)
Hi all~ I'm new here, found you in a search. I need some help. Our church has a rather large group of African immigrants. Currently, their children are going to public school. It is a waste of time! The elementary school has about 60 Swahili speaking students with ONE interpreter. The kids are not learning, and have even missed lunch because no one came to get them and they didn't understand the announcement. Some of these parents would like to homeschool. They, however, have no idea what Illinois laws are re: this or how to find curriculum in their language. I homeschool in Iowa (we're on the border) and know that IL has decent laws. Do those same laws apply to these African immigrants? Is there a way to find curriculum in their language? Can one bi-lingual person teach the group with the parents' assistance? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much for your help!

The same laws should apply for them as anyone else. In the case of Illinois, that means they're pretty much free to school however they want. The only requirements are that "language arts, biological and physical science, math, social sciences, fine arts, health and physical development" be covered in the subject material.

I would call that a private school, rather than homeschooling, which is also a good option for these parents.
