Wanted: Canadian Homeschooling Mum

Postby Jessa » Sun Mar 26, 2006 2:41 am

Hi There!
I'm looking for a Canadian Rural Homeschooling Mum, for my mum to write/email to.

She's a christian homeschooling mum of 9 from New Zealand, and has asked me to help her find an e-pal mum like her, in Canada, to write to, trade homeschooling ideas and tips, and learn about the life of someone on the other side of the world.
She has a great sense of humour, is into alternative lifestyles, things like adobe building, alternative power sources (their house has power from a micro-hydropower system my dad designed and built) old fashioned ways of doing things (preserving fruit, woodstoves, big families, making own bread, etc.) and for those of you who have heard of her, she likes Carla Emery.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in emailing my mum, please reply to this topic with your email, and a bit about you as a wee note/hello letter to my mum, and I'll send it to her so she can contact you.

Her name is Sha'ntina, and I know she would really love to hear from any of you who'd like to write.

Hello Jess,

I would be interested in "chatting" with your Mum (or Mom for the Canadian in me :-). I'm not exactly sure I would fit the need, but you can decided and go from there!

I am starting homeschooling of our two children. I have a son, age 6, who is currently attending a local Christian school. Our daughter is 4 years old (hardly the nine children in your family), and is attending the pre-school program at my son's current school.

We have decided (mostly me) that we can't afford private school, and our son is too impressionable to go back to the public system where he spent kindergarden.

My husband has his teachers degree, but always frowned upon my desires to homeschool our children. So it has taken a bit, but when we told the current school that we couldn't afford them (read, we are trying to stay "responsible" to our debts), they strongly voted in favour our our homeschooling as opposed to sending them to the free public system. This swayed my hubby in my favour.

My intrestest include many things, I scrapbook (and sell product to fund this addiction), I sew (my hubby is 6' 8" and our children are long and skinny requiring my efforts to clothe them), I garden, can or preserve the garden's results, I knit, crochet, read, sing and am currently taking lessons for my grade 8 level. My husband and I are committed to similar renewable energy resources.

Currently we can't afford a home of our own, but we farm manage a broiler chicken farm for another person. We also raise four egg laying chickens of our own, and a calf to be butchered this fall for meat. There are also dry milk cows living on our farm, belonging to another farmer, and we chore for him as well.

Ideally one day we could build our own home, and we are rather fond of the strawbale construction method at the moment (think it would be good for Canadian winters).

In the meantime, our efforts include every energy reducing thing we can in a regular, huge drafty farmhouse!

So, perhaps, if this message at all interests you or your Mom, let me know... oh, I grew up in Bangladesh, had several New Zealand native friends growing up... hence my interest!

I would be interested in writing to your Mum! I am a homeschooling Mum of 5 in rural Alberta, Canada. We have 16 acres, two dogs, 31 chickens, two rabbits and a pair of moose that live in our woods......

We emigrated from England 4 years ago and lived in the city for 3 years before finally finding a country home we fell in love with!

I have a friend living on the north Island of NZ on a farm by the sea - he loves it there....and we have an Uncle that lives in NZ also.

This will be our first full year on our acreage so we are still learning the ropes....country life here is very different to England! We have several fruit trees and are just starting our vegetable garden for the year. We are learning about composting and organic gardening.......I hope eventually to breed Alpacas and sell their wool.

I have to admit I've never heard of Carla Emery ;)

I'd prefer not to post my Email address on this board but if you don't mind posting your Mum's then I will gladly write to her.

Best wishes

Just FYI, you can communicate using the PM feature. Just click the button at the bottom of the post of the person you wish to send a message to. This way you can keep private information private.
