Teaching a preschooler numbers

Postby kubbsy » Tue May 01, 2018 5:02 am

Hi peeps

I've been teaching my 3 year old son numbers, but how long should it take? what should they know at this age, and what should i progress on to, after teaching number recognition, counting and sequencing?

So you're doing number recognition but not yet counting?? I'm not sure if I understood correctly.

My son can count to 10 in English and to 5 French and Spanish just through repetition, he's almost 3.
I think the best way to teach numbers is to count everything, especially things you child likes.
Having a snack? Cut the food up into pieces and count them before eating
Oh look, some trees, let's count them...

When he's in the bath or the car we sing the numbers or number songs eg. "1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive" or "5 little monkeys jumping on the bed" just to repeat the numbers.

Soon we'll start looking at the numbers so that he can recognize them and read numbers but for me counting is the first step.
