I homeschool my 14yr old who has Aspergers and find myself frustrated by his lack of interest in learning anything. He just wants to "hurry up" and get "school over with".
Anyone have this issue...or suggestions??

Hello, I have Asperger's Syndrome and I can remember going through the motions in school and viewing the majority of what I learned as an obligation (I wasn't home schooled) that I "unlearned" as soon as I no longer needed to retain the information. What a waste of time and energy. I have a couple of thoughts. First, would it be possible to somehow incorporate his special interest into more of his assignments? Second, is it possible for him to have more of a choice in the materials that he has to learn? I would cut out anything that isn't completely necessary for a diploma and replace that with materials that will shape his special interest(s) into a career. Do everything you can to focus on his strengths and find ways to work around his limitations without making them into a bigger deal than they need to be (I'm not suggesting that that is what you're doing here).
Let me know if you have any questions. I have a 2 year old with Classic Autism and my husband also has Asperger's, so I guess we've learned a thing or two
