I'm a student and I'm doing a research project on homeschooling. I just wondered if anyone has homeschooled their children and then put them back into mainstream schooling? And if so what are your views on this? Does homeschooling affect mainstream schooling in the sense of socialising etc? Just any views on this would help my research and be of real interest to me, even just views on homeschooling in general.

You may have a hard time finding enough families that have done this to put together a research paper If I had to speculate, I'd say that homeschooled children are probably not going to have much trouble socializing - with adults or well-educated, mature children their own age. There may not be a common frame of reference with the majority of public schoolers, though this will of course vary by quality of school. The schools in our area are fairly good, the ones 45 minutes away not so much.

My son is now going to a public charter high school after homeschooling all his life. The decision was not the one I preferred, but my son wanted to play high school sports and my husband agreed.

A little background - my son has always been a bit quiet when first meeting people, not extremely outgoing until you get to know him.

He has had no problem socializing with the other kids whatsoever and loves the social life that high school offers. That said, the down side is the behavior and attitudes he's bringing home. I don't know how much of it is just teen hormones, but he seems to have no patience with his younger siblings anymore. How quickly peers can replace the importance of family. I find it very depressing.

That's just my experience. I know it would be different for everyone - some kids do not like the school environment (homeschooled or not) - so it isn't really something you can generalize. There have been studies about homeschoolers that include socialization. You can find some of those at www.hslda.org.

I personally think that public school is good as it help you to learn from an educator and learn about your feelings aswell get an opportunity to make new friends and learn how to stand up for yourself. I believe, the problem with homeschool is that especially teenagers just go there to socialize and don't care about their education.
I therefore think that school is good if you want to learn and homeschooling is good as long as you socialize too.

I think it is going to depend on the personality of your children. If they are outgoing, then it won't be a problem for them to adjust. Even if it is, socializing will be a good skill for them to learn when making the transition. Better now than later!
