Hi, new to this board but I am looking for anyone who can recommend a good reading program to help. My daughter is in 7th grade and receives services in school for academic issues, however she is extremely embarrassed by her poor reading skills. I am looking for a program to help at home. I have heard of the Wilson Reading program, but not sure if that is manageable at home? Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I guess the question is, did she get the proper foundation in phonics and then just not go on from there? Or did they try "Whole Language" on her and teach her sight reading, which tends to cap out well under 1000 words? If the former, then it's really just a matter of getting some interesting books of the right reading level and having her read a lot, every now and then doing a page out loud so you can correct mistakes. If the latter, she may need to go back to the beginning and learn phonics before she can move forward.

The good news is that children who start to read late can still catch up and be far ahead by college. Some children just doing get interested in reading early on, we actually used comic books with my youngest two sisters to get them going.
