Hi -- I'm an "experienced" homeschooler (16 years) but does it ever get routine or typical??? I think not. My eldest has graduated from NYU with Honors, and my middle child will be a junior in the autumn at Fordham or Hunter College. My last child is finishing 9th grade this year, and he's my biggest challenge to date! Just looking for some help with high school curriculum & ttitude -- no, I'm not an expert after h.s.'ing two through high school -- they were self-motivated and finished in 3 years; this one is recalcitrant and digging in his heels and will definitely take 4 years! I live in New Jersey (NYC suburb) and do some part time teaching and copy editing as well as home schooling. Great husband, who no longer has time to do any teaching, but is 100% supportive...and a pretty good home school environment...although #3 child wants to go to town high school.

If you can afford it, you might look into enrolling him in online or community college courses for the one or two subjects he finds most difficult, or that you have the most trouble doing at home (lab science, for instance). This is a reasonable compromise between homeschool and public high school, and should help keep him motivated- since if he goofs around, he'll have to answer to someone outside his own family. The risk of public humiliation is a strong motivator.
