Final Stretch (GED within a year!) but unsure of some things

Postby Mike&Gina » Mon Dec 08, 2008 6:12 pm

We have a 17 year old with some learning disabilities who will hopefully be taking his GED within the year.
Our teaching method now is a private teacher who comes to our home (which is working better than anything we've ever tried by far!).
The approach is: he is studying for one GED section at a time, and will, in turn take one GED section test at a time (5 sections total in the GED).
The teacher suggested we post our situation along with some questions, before deciding for sure to go this route.
Are there any alternatives/suggestions that anyone would suggest as far as our approach/plans?
From what we can see, an online high school is too aggressive; one subject at a time in prep for the GED seems to be working much better and one on one is the best method he's ever had.

Is it imperative that he get a GED? As homeschoolers, you have the option of issuing him a diploma of his own.

GED

Hi - thanks for the reply! :D
Right- he doesn't require a GED to get in to all colleges. (He'd have to take an ACT/SAT).
However, some colleges won't accept a home school diploma, we've found.
He is looking at a design school that would require a GED or a diploma, and a home school diploma is not accepted, since it is not considered a certified school, by this school.
What we might do is get the GED, attend the design school, and then see about some other colleges.
