Hi there,
My husband and I have been planning to start homeschooling our two children (ages 13 and 11...grades 5 and 8 ) this fall but we are actually considering pulling them out NOW with only a month left in the school year. We live in Maine. I know that I need to file a letter of intent and that our state requires 175 instructional days and the days they have already attended public school will count towards this year. I also know that every year with our subsequent years letter to DOE we need to send either a copy of the kids standardized test scores or a copy of their portfolio that has been signed off on by a licensed educator. My question is if we pull them out and homeschool them now, will I still need to submit the scores or have a teacher sign off for the 30 or so days left in this year? How can they be tested or assessed on what we've done in such a short time? Also on a side note...Does anyone have any experience or opinions about using Time4Learning for the core classes (Math, Language Arts, Science and Social studies) and then using a modified version of unschooling for everything else?? Opinions welcome! We are new to this and looking for input!
Thanks a bunch!

My very strong recommendation is to join Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) before you withdraw your children, and ask their advice.

Can you just let your children be absent frequently and just make it through?

Hi there,
Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately they have already missed so much time that we've been threatened with truancy! Sad So that's not an option unless I want to fight with DHHS. I'm not up for that fight! LOL
On another note...just curious why you would urge us to get involved with HSLDA? Will we be confronted with trouble by pulling the kids now??
God Bless!! [/quote]
