New to homeschooling 6th grader

Postby malena » Sat Feb 22, 2014 10:39 pm

I am so excited to find this Forum. I am new to homeschooling suddently this week kind of unexpected.
I welcome any advice on getting started. I had to pull her from school during the middle of the school year. My gut tells me to access weak areas before jumping into curriculum. I am excited yet nervous at the same time.

Depending on why you pulled her out, a few weeks of cooling off and reset period might not hurt. A lot of curriculum publishers have assessment tests, so if you want to begin by looking for weak areas, that's probably where to start. After that, the big decision is whether to attempt a packaged curriculum or go more subject-based, and which way you go depends on her skill level. If she's up and down all over the place, a packaged curriculum obviously won't work, so you can remove that from your decision process. We are also moving into the homeschool convention season, so you can try to find an event in your state or a nearby state that you can attend within the next month. The best way to make curriculum decisions is by flipping through a lot of curricula and then picking what looks good. We also print yearly Reader Awards in our magazine, as well as vast numbers of articles on homeschooling trends, curriculum reviews, and lots of other good stuff - you could try a free issue and then subscribe if you like what you see.
