In 1504, Raphael came to Florence. During this period, he mainly created Madonna paintings. These paintings brought him great reputation. People are eager to appreciate all the Madonna paintings made by Raphael, which are extremely so beautiful and marvelous that they attract the viewers to indulge in pleasures without stopping. His Madonna paintings are concerned with Italian folk female charm and the most sympathetic to maternal mood. So after a few hundred years Europe has a compliment word for women like Raphael's Madonna. It is difficult to count how many pieces of work Raphael has completed. The art history generally applies the details or the belonging of the painting to distinguish, such as Madonna della Sedia, The Alba Madonna, etc. This painting was named because of its portraying a goldfinch being held in a baby's hand.

During 3 years since 1504, the Madonna paintings made by Raphael almost became a series of variants of this theme. This showed that Raphael was trying to get rid of the formal conception of Madonna and release the performance range to put the Madonna paintings to a new level. Generally speaking, it started with this painting Madonna of The Goldfinch, since it was more typical. The colors in this painting were selected very strictly, with the red jacket and blue purple cloak and warm colors of two babies constituting a stable painting. Baby's naivety and the Madonna's care formed the basic content new song to sing for happiness.

Raphael has a gift for colors. This painting fully shows his artistic maturity after he came to Florence. However, there are some imitate of brushwork still being failed to cover up. Maybe Raphael worshiped da Vinci too much. This painting was made in 1506, measuring 107×77 cm. It is used egg powder with oil and drawn on the board. Now it is collected in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
