Hi All. If you live anywhere near Charleston, IL, you might want to plan on visiting the Thut Greenhouse at EIU to see the Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum) when it blooms. The Titan Arum produces the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world! It is also a threatened species. If you visit, be prepared, for it will smell like rotting meat, which attracts flies as pollinators. The estimated date for the bloom to open is June 20th.
There is a daily update at http://www.eiu.edu/~biology/news/titan_arum.htm |

| I would love to have seen that! And wouldn't you know I was in Illinois just last week, but I did not know about it then. |

I live there, but I left on vacation a day or two before the bloom opened!
At least I got to see it when it was close to blooming. |

| Don't they have one of these at Disney World? Perhaps at The Land in Epcot? |

I don't know, but they only bloom every six years, I think, and the bloom is only open for a couple of days. |

| This flower ended up being 67.5 inches tall. It was very impressive when I stood beside it before it opened. |

Wow, I guess this is the year of the Titan because when I looked at the other places where it is found blooming, I found one in my back yard. I'm going to take the boys to see it this week! Being boys they will love it! THe live cam is going right now if you want to see it.

I don't think they light it up at night though, so be sure to look at it during daylight EST. _________________ Phi 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. |
