Go ahead, ask me anything about what its like to be homeschooled
or at least my experience being a homeschooler.
I guess I'll start off with a little bit about me:
I'm a 15 (almost 16) year old guy
I've been homeschooled all my life
I'm an only child
I do have friends (I met them from scouts and church and then friends of friends both girls and guys)
I'm studying trig and I get good grades otherwise
I love music and playing guitar and writing songs and playing in bands
I didn't have any real friends untill I was 13
I do feel left out and lonely at times (somehow that doesn't seem like a strong enough way to put it)
If it wasn't for the friends I have I would die
I hope I can help answer any questions from the my point of view.
ask away |

I guess the most important question is, does your loneliness stem from being homeschooled or from being an only child? We didn't have much in the way of formal social activities when I was younger (Social Services was still snatching kids at the time), but I had eight brothers and sisters and could explore the neighborhood or play with a few of the neighbor's kids outside of school hours, and there was always the occasional contest or homeschool convention. Plus we had computers Things would have been far more boring as an only child, though.
Now of course, the neighborhood is all finished being built and not as much fun to explore, but homeschooling is safe and my younger brothers and sisters do Civil Air Patrol and swim team and various church activities and have friends from all of those, plus a number of friends in the neighborhood. There's a lot more available to homeschoolers now than there was 10 years ago, or even 5. _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

You have friends, yet you are lonely. Why do you think this is? What is the cause of this loneliness? Are you really lonely or are you experiencing something that a number of teens experiences at one point or another? Do you think things would be different if you attended public school? Do all public school students are happy and never experience loneliness? |

That this might be the case because he rarely sees them because he is homeschooled? That if you are a homeschooling parent, your own children might feel the same way? Do you not suppose that if he were in public school he might at least have a better chance of not feeling lonely? |

| I don't think that I display any signs of an internet troll. I do have a dissenting opinion, but if the moderators don't like that they can ban me. I doubt that it will come to that, though. After all, this is a homeschool versus public school section of the forum. |

against being homeschooled
get in many agruements trying to go to public school
im failing
i have one special needs brother. also homeschooled
if i didnt have my two friends i would die.
im not close with them because i never see them
i play in a local bands..and repair guitars
i have never had a girlfriend
i feel that im am rotting in my room alone.
and i think that homeschooling should be the choice of the student
(if that was the case i would be a homecoming right now. not posting on this forum)

Homeschooling doesn't have to mean staying at home 24/7. You can often still participate in school sports, and there's lots of other extracurriculars available if you go looking for them. What sorts of things do you enjoy doing? _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

Hmm, where do you live? I can go check the relevant law and see if they're correct about the sports. _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

Looks like they're right, homeschoolers aren't allowed access to public school sports in Georgia. However, there are a number of homeschool groups that organize sports and other extracurriculars:

How can I be putting words in someone's mouth when I am asking questions, which is what the OP said we should do?
I think you both are playing the blame game instead of recognizing a normal facet of growing up or taking responsibility for you own roles in how you feel.
Public school is not a guarantee that you will have friends. |
