An update:

We are in the process of choosing a new textbook for our non-major's biology course. Most of the new textbooks are indeed using the 3 domain system of classification and are limiting the kingdoms to the domain Eukarya. Most also acknowledge the problem of lumping unrelated organisms into the "Protista" and that more kingdoms will be created for the protists. One book also suggested an alternative strategy of demoting the plant, animal, and fungal kingdoms to a lower status.
