Here it's French, English and German as mother-tongue and we're among a Spanish community.
For all you who are studying German with small children (1-3 year olds). I recommend the movie "Kleiner Dodo". It's very melodious and fun. |

I speak to our children in English; my husband speaks to them in Chinese. I also use Auslan (Australian Sign Language) as I speak, so both our children have been able to use all three languages fluently since they began to speak.
Since they began schooling, they've also done Latin and Japanese. Japanese is very easy, especially to a Chinese speaker, so they picked that one up quickly and can understand kids cartoons without trouble now. Latin was at the request of our daughter, and they've done a year so far. At the moment, they only use it to speak to each other 'in code' around family members who can understand bits of the other languages.
Although I'm fluent in Japanese (worked there for a few years) and only vaguely capable in Latin (highschool), Latin is actually easier for them to learn because of the textbooks we used. But both were pretty easy anyway. After a few months in each language they were replacing normal daily conversations with their new languages.
Once their Latin is up to scratch, they'll be allowed to pick another language if they want. The only other language I know anything of is German, so hopefully they'll pick that and not Urdu or something. Might have to get a tutor. |

Oldest has studied Latin and is going to study Japanese. Youngest has studied German and is currently studying Spanish. I think we're almost ready to travel the world. _________________ Many blessings,

I speak to our kids in Chinese and my husband speaks to them in English. My son is now 5 and started kindergarten.
Now he goes to an after-school program to learn Chinese and we read books like My First Chinese Words and other storybooks in Chinese. You can find lots of Western classic storybooks like Guess How Much I Love You that have been translated into Chinese to read to your kids on http://www.BetterChinese.com. |
