EDITOR'S NOTE: We have added a homepage poll for this as well:
http://www.home-school.com/poll/?id=president2008

-------------------

I take the liberty to paste.

From Page:
Congressman Ron Paul on Home Schooling By Rep. Ron Paul, MD.
The Covenant News ~ July 27, 2007

Dr. Ron Paul has been a consistent supporter of home schooling and educational freedom while serving in Congress. He has introduced several pieces of legislation which would return to parents the freedom to teach their children at home and in the manner they think best. Additionally, he has introduced bills that would provide tax credits for American families to help pay for education expenses. As President, Ron Paul will continue to fight for the rights of parents to provide their children with the knowledge and values they believe are most important.

"While serving in Congress, I have had the opportunity to get to know many of the home-schooling parents in my district. I am very impressed by the job these parents are doing in providing their children with a quality education. I have also found that home schooling parents are among the most committed activists in the cause of advancing individual liberty, constitutional government, and traditional values. I am sure my colleagues on the Education Committee would agree that the support of home schoolers was crucial in defeating the scheme to implement a national student test."
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congr ... 092600.htm

"Mr. Speaker, to be a home schooling parent takes a unique dedication to family and education. In many cases, home school families must forgo the second income of one parent, as well as incurring the costs of paying for textbooks, computers, and other school supplies. Home schooling parents must pay these expenses while, like all American families, struggling to pay state, local, and federal taxes." "In order to help home schoolers, and all parents, devote more of their resources to their children's education, I have introduced the Family Education Freedom Act (H.R. 935). This bill provides all parents a $3,000 per child tax credit for K-12 education expenses. This bill would help home school parents to provide their children a first-class education in a loving home environment."
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congr ... 0hmsch.htm

"This bill will provide up to $3,000 in tax credits per child, per year, for every American family. Parents will be eligible for the tax credit whether their kids are in public schools, private schools, church schools, or are home schooled. The tax credit can apply toward items such as after-school tutoring, purchasing a computer and educational software, tuition and the cost of books and materials, and almost anything else which the parents believe will enhance their child's education."

"I am absolutely convinced that the key to an educationally prosperous nation is found not in a federal government program, but in the right of parents - consulting with teachers and local administrators - to effectively utilize their moral responsibility for their children. By so doing, we will foster a philosophy of independence, self-reliance, and local responsibility; a philosophy which will permeate our classrooms and our government."
http://www.house.gov/paul/tst/tst97/tst072097.htm

"The reality, though, is that parents - not "well-meaning" politicians - know what options are best for their kids' education. Unfortunately, America has been saddled with a tax system which limits the ability of parents to pursue the academic options best suited for their children's individual situations. With combined taxes taking almost 50 percent of the average family's income, there is little left over for low- and middle-class parents to even consider other educational opportunities."
http://www.house.gov/paul/tst/tst98/tst042098.htm

"One of my main goals in the 107th Congress is to return control over our children's education to parents and teachers in Texas and across America. Unfortunately, as the federal government continues to increase its influence over education, the role of parents and teachers becomes more and more limited. Over the last 30 years, this increased federal control has proven harmful to education standards while wasting taxpayer dollars.

I believe that parents and teachers can better educate our children than federal education bureaucrats and politicians. With that in mind, this week I will introduce my "Education Freedom Package." This education package consists of three bills designed to increase parental control over their children's education, increase teacher pay, and provide incentives for individuals to make contributions to local schools."

"The centerpiece of my education package is the "Family Education Freedom Act." This measure will give parents a $3,000 per-child per-year tax credit. The credit can apply to tuition, tutors, books, computers, and other related educational needs. It also applies equally to parents who choose to educate their children in public, private, or home settings. This tax cut is more effective than current voucher plans, which leave the door open to increased government influence on teacher standards and school curricula. Also, the tax credit takes no funding away from public schools."

"The second measure is the "Education Improvement Tax Cut," legislation allowing individuals to claim up to $3,000 per year in tax credits for cash or "in-kind" donations to schools and scholarship programs. The goal is to encourage people to set up scholarship funds for disadvantaged youth, and also become more involved with their local schools.......

I would be interested in the opinion of others.

Better than the other Republican candidates. It's such an all-star cast of duds this time around. Giuliani, for instance, not only supports abortion, but state-funded abortion. McCain pushed women in the military (and his campaign seems to have pretty much run out of money). I don't think another Bush would win the election this time around, even if that were a good idea. Etc. Obama probably beats all the other candidates on charisma, but I don't want a rich liberal running things, and Hillary would be a total disaster.

If I had to lay odds, I'd say that Obama will win the Democratic primary, and Ron Paul has a decent chance of winning the Republican primary. Which of those two would win 1v1, I don't know. It would certainly be worth donating some money to Ron Paul's campaign as an investment against having our taxes raised, though.

Ron Paul does appeal to the Libertarian side of me, although I am not all that certain about him on foreign issues as hard-core Libertarians tend to be separatists, so he might be a bit to extreme for most conservatives. I really liked Alan Keys positions in 2000 and nothing has really changed on that. I also have my eye on Fred Thompson and a few others.

Decisions, decisions! :|

Hmm. I see Romney supports No Child Left Behind, but with the change HSLDA managed to insert, is that a problem? The mandatory testing of No Child Left Behind does not apply to home educators:
http://www.hslda.org/courtreport/V19N2/V19N209.asp

Are there statistics somewhere on how Ron Paul is doing compared to Romney, McCain, Giuliani? Huckabee is a nobody.

The following may be interesting:
http://www.ontheissues.org/Ron_Paul.htm
http://www.ontheissues.org/Mitt_Romney.htm
http://www.ontheissues.org/John_McCain.htm

Ron Paul seems to be rather confused in a lot of areas other than education, as it turns out. The following is a list of some of the things I disagree with or find confusing:

- Protect all voluntary associations; don't define marriage. (Oct 2007)
- Voted NO on allowing stockholder voting on executive compensation. (Apr 2007)
- Changed opinion to anti-death penalty due to many mistakes. (Sep 2007)
- Voted NO on more prosecution and sentencing for juvenile crime. (Jun 1999)
- Repeal most federal drug laws; blacks are treated unfairly. (Sep 2007)
- Not US role to monitor eradication of legal slavery in Sudan. (Sep 2007)
- Inappropriate to impose sanctions for persecuting Christians. (Sep 2007)
- China trade not contingent on human rights & product safety. (Sep 2007)
- Voted NO on prohibiting product misuse lawsuits on gun manufacturers. (Oct 2005)
- Voted NO on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse. (Apr 2003)
- Not government's role to protect people like Terri Schiavo. (Sep 2007)
- Voted NO on denying non-emergency treatment for lack of Medicare co-pay. (Feb 2006)
- Voted NO on limited prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients. (Nov 2003)
- Voted NO on banning physician-assisted suicide. (Oct 1999)
- No amnesty, but impractical to round up 12 million illegals. (Sep 2007)

Going to look through the others now and see how they stack up.

I've now read through McCain's info, the following were the only issues I have with him:

- Supports federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. (May 2007)
- Supports fetal tissue research; against over-intensity. (Jan 2000)
- Abortion OK if raped; and no testing for rape. (Jan 2000)
- Voted YES on setting aside 10% of highway funds for minorities & women. (Mar 1998)
- Voted NO on repealing tax subsidy for companies which move US jobs offshore. (Mar 2005)
- Voted NO on restricting class-action lawsuits. (Dec 1995)
- Voted YES on banning drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. (Mar 2005)
- Voted YES on targeting 100,000 hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2010. (Jun 2003)
- Voted YES on killing restrictions on violent videos to minors. (May 1999)
- Support the One-China policy, don't weaken it. (Mar 2000)
- Voted YES on allowing patients to sue HMOs & collect punitive damages. (Jun 2001)
- Voted YES on increasing minimum wage to $7.25. (Feb 2007)
- "Profligate rake" during Academy and Junior Officer years. (Nov 1999) (doesn't really figure into whether to vote for him now, but interesting background considering his involvement in Tailhook)
- Voted NO on telecomm deregulation. (Feb 1996)

He actually seems a fairly close match, aside from the abortion issues. Given, he is in favor of repealing Roe v. Wade and banning partial-birth abortions, as well as maintaining the ban on military base abortions and banning human cloning, so he's fairly anti-abortion, just not completely 100%. On a human rights basis, he may actually rate higher than Ron Paul, given Ron Paul's opinions on other issues. Thoughts, anyone?

I'll read through Romney later when I have time.

Being from Massachusetts my problem with Romney is he has a habit of saying one thing then doing another. Saying he's against something like abortion, then well only in this circumstance. I liked him as a governor but not sure I can handle the wishy washy in the white house.

A good family man though. That's always good.

What about Fred Thompson, Any thoughts there?
