Help: Vocab curriculum for an enrichment course

Postby TutorGirl » Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:27 am

I am an english tutor at a non-profit. We are starting an english enrichment program. One of the aspects I need to address is vocabulary. Our competition uses books of words and definitions that are grade level for each grade, where kids go over 50 words a week.

I am looking for a way to efficiently have material to compete because our class has already started. Can you give me any resources or links that I might be able to use? I teach 4th-8th grade.

Also, is jr. high too early to just use a bunch of SAT words?

I am a new teacher, used to tutoring college business, so any help would be appreciated

Here are a few ideas.

Wordly Wise for elementary ages.

Vocabulary Cartoons. Elementary edition is for grades 3-6. Other 2 books are for grades 7-12.

This year, one of my sons has this book - Hot Words for the SAT.

You can definitely teach SAT words in junior high.

Here are some sites.

Do you think that the Wordly Wise program will be compatible with the Chinese culture?
