Same goes for garbage disposals, vacuum cleaners, or anything else that spins, grinds, chops, etc. fast enough to hurt you. Don't stick your hand in until you're sure the device is turned off!
Also, don't stand in front of the lawn mower, it can kick up rocks and other debris and fire them at you at high speeds. This is more a caution for the innocent bystander than the person pushing the lawnmower.. _________________ The Farming Game - Software Edition for PC, Mac, Linux

One of my son's friends was standing in the yard while his dad was mowing, a wire was caught in the blades and shot out and into the boy's calf. Thankfully he is ok but that was scary, what if it had been higher?
