We're considering moving from Maryland to Massachusetts this summer. Our son is 16 and will be doing his final high school year. I'm wondering whether we can just keep him enrolled in his umbrella school so he can finish school and get his diploma from them.
Homeschool here has been quite pleasant, as our umbrella school is very relaxed and hands off. Massachusetts looks much tougher, but I read that the maximum compulsory age there is 16, so I'm wondering whether we'll be OK just continuing as we've been. My son will be 17 in October.
I'd appreciate opinions on this, especially clarification of the compulsory age in Massachusetts. Thanks! |

Hi I'm also from MA and I just took my 16 y.o. daughter out of high school. The max. age is 16 according to Mass. Regs. Code tit. 603, § 8.02. Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 76, § 1. They did have a packet for me to homeschool while reporting to them but I declined and they didn't have too much to say.
I just signed her out. She returned her books, cleaned out her locker and off we went! So I would guess that you wouldn't have to report your son to anyone around here!

By the time they know that you are in MA, he'll be graduated. MA is pretty slow on things, depending on where you are moving to, they can be pretty overwhelmed. The last thing that they want to do is find a child that isn't even of compulsory age. _________________ Phi 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. |

| Great! These replies were very reassuring. We're still not sure whether we'll be moving or not, but it's good to know our homeschooling can continue as usual if we do. Thanks! |
