In our state you do not have to take standardized tests or record grades. We picked out a cover school that does both because we wanted to know if the kids would be able to do well in a verifiable way.
This year, 10th grade for my girl, she took the ACT. We don't have the results back yet. We went to the web site and signed up. It took a while. There are a million questions one must answer but it was easy to do.
In the mail came out test prep book, date and location of testing.
Each year my kids have either taken the SAT through the cover school or the CAT at home.
One of the things I hate the most is grading. I particularly hate grading Latin and Algebra, perhaps because my knowledge base is so low on both. I feel a need to quantify their work though so I do it.
Prior to high school level I wouldn't worry about grade level or grades if I had it to do all over again. I would have also started earlier in home school than when we did.
