We have debated homeschooling our children (only one is currently in public school) for 2 yrs. As public schools go, we're in a highly respected district, however, she is not getting what she needs academically or spiritually. God seems to be urging us in that direction, however, we are so nervous about making the switch. Our fears and reservations seem to be suffocating us!! Would it be better to finish the year out in p.s.? Is there anything we could/should do to make the transition smoother for her? Are there good support groups online? Are there groups for homeschooled children to chat and share w/ one another? What would be a good curriculum to start w/ mid year? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hard to tell without knowing more about your situation. I assume there are no imminent threats in terms of bullying, disease, violence, etc, and that it's more a matter of mediocre education and the general atmosphere not being supportive of your beliefs? If so, it won't hurt to take your daughter out now, but on the other hand, it might not hurt to let her finish the year. The decision is really going to have to be yours.

Well, if you're taking her out now, it would probably be best to complete whatever coursework she's currently working on. See if you can get copies of the syllabuses and textbooks, or at least an overview of what's remaining in each subject. Transitioning mid-grade may be somewhat difficult otherwise, unless the coursework is so hopelessly pathetic that it doesn't matter if you start over.

Yes, see my other reply. You can also try searching at groups.yahoo.com for online support groups, though what you really need is a group near you that organizes real-life activities.

I don't know if there are groups specifically for this, but if you find a support group in your area, I'm sure there are families who would be happy to have their children chat with your daughter.

Most packaged curriculums are sectioned by grade, so you'd basically have to pick the closest grade and hope for the best. On the other hand, you could pick the subjects individually, in which case it's not so much of a problem. We use Saxon Math ourselves, for instance, though imho you can do better after Algebra 2 using a different format, and some people do find Saxon a bit dry. Quartermile is also good for math drills.
