Map Basics
I went to Wal-Mart today to check out what types of workbooks I could find for my son when I came across a School Zone Activity Zone Book Travel the Great States. It covers all the states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canda basics. This is what I am going to use for now until I can get something a little better to use for Social Studies/Geography. I am trying to find worksheets about Map Basics like legends, map scales, compass and so forth. I have plenty of ideas in my head about what kinda activities I could do but I am just someone who likes to prolong a lesson at least a week and not a day.

Carmen Sandiego--Where in the US is she?
I found two versions when I went to a Half Price Book store today.
One was Where in the US is Carmen Sandiego? And Where in the Word is Carmen Sandiego? Which has some language arts incorperated in it. I am thinking about going out and getting them for the summer.

Maps
The US Geological Survey has a free program called Map Adventures. It is a good introduction to maps for elementary age children. It teaches about symbols, the legend, the compass, map grids and map scale. Once you print it out, you will have to spend some preparation time before you can use it. I hope this helps.

Another bit of free software can be found here. They're little puzzle games where you fit countries, states and provinces into countries and continents. Quite a few are availible and I've had as much fun with them as my daughter.

I borrowed Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego from the library and it doesn't tell us how in the world to play it. Can someone tell me how it's played? I'm also looking to buy some of those books if anyone has any they want to sell me. Thanks!
