Hi.

My name is Jen. My boys are 6 and 7 (1 year 1 day apart). One is ADD and the other is very hyper and very implusive, with a speech delay.

We live in Northern Illinois, right now my children are still attending public school. We are not happy with the situation right now or at all since the eldest has entered Kindergarten. They are currently in 1st and 2nd grade. I have contemplated the idea of Homeschooling for most of this time, if not longer. It has never seemed very possible to me.

Lately, DH and I have been hitting science and history/social studies pretty deeply with the boys. Primarily because they are in 1st and 2nd grade and the amount of time they spend on those subjects might equal 1 hour per month. That is sad. They have also cut PE, Art and Music from the curriculum. Right now the kids in our district are ONLY being taught Reading, Writing (Grammar, spelling, etc..) and Math. They are in school from 8am-2:30ish (I say ish, because school officially ends at 2:40, but one bus comes and picks up the kids early to maintain schedule).

During the 5 1/2 hours they are IN school, they have a 1/2 hour AM recess, a 1/2 hour lunch followed by a 1/2 hour recess and a 1/2 hour PM recess. That is 2 hours designated of free time, leaving them in class with close to 25 other students for 3 1/2 hours to learn vaguely about the limited subject curriculum that they are given. After this they are still sent home with close to an hours worth of homework each evening.

Anyway, we are still planning to after-school for the remainder of this school year much more seriously than in the past to get a better idea of where the kids stand and it will give us time to gather information about our current state laws and different curriculum materials available to us.

We would like to fully homeschool by next school year.

Hi Jenn,
I live outside Chicago. I am new to this site also and plan to homeschool my kids next fall also, pulling them out of the public school system. My kids are 7, 6 and 2 1/2 years old. Love to chat and compare notes. Take care.

Sounds like you have a good action plan.. Smile

do your kids a favor and add music back into their curriculum
in some form or fashion.. Smile

I suspect you will find it most helpful, as will they.

Thanks everyone.
Some issues arose at the PS yesterday and we decided to begin come Jan 2007.
I sent formal requests of intent to withdraw and request for transcripts today by certified mail/return reciept.

I will definitly make TONS of use of adding music in about every fashion possible.

We will be using the SOS curriculum.
I am scared and excited.

And I am quite glad to hear your view on music, it is more important
than many like to imagine.
