Here are some tips:
*Read to your child every day. This will create a love of reading and a love of learning.
*Take your child to the public library on a regular basis to check out books.
*Don't try to make homeschooling like regular school. Think outside the box. Make it relaxed and fun. (Don't just sit at a desk or table doing worksheets.)
*Don't isolate yourself. Join a homeschool support group or co-op in your area so your child can make friends with other homeschoolers.

HSCoach gave you some good advise. The laws in every State are different, and it is important to know them. You can easily find out about your State laws (usually free), and connect with others at your State Home School Association. To find one in your State, use this link (scroll down to your state, and click on it).
