We figure you know what you want to talk about better than we do, so why not give us a hand in picking topics?

"Day at Our House" is probably what you're looking

Our magazine Practical Homeschooling has a "Day at Our House" feature which is basically exactly what you just described. You could order one or two of our back issue sets, which would be cheaper than a book and just as good.

I have been HSing my 13 sence last year and hope to take Agust off.
We also have two young boys 6 and 4.

I try to start the day by 9am and be done by lunch. I get the Math and L.A. out of the way first and try to follow it up with somthing fun. We alrenate History/Geo and Science every other day.

It 's really going to depend on your family's life style. We also choose to school 11 months out of the year so we can take Fridays off for feild trips or whatever.

Hope this helps:) Oh, and always begin the day with prayer. Without Gods help I's loose my mind!

Hi,
We just started this September. I have read many books prior to hs and have some very seasoned friends that have homeschooled. They all say be flexible and open.
We start our day by going for a walk or run on the beach with our dog who needs to release energy, she is only 10 months old. That way, we have all had our exersise and blood is flowing. The dog is tired and will rest for several hours. So we start at 10. We too start with a prayer.
My slmost 8 yr old can choose between L.A. Math, Writing or History, and we go from there. Monday we have designated for "field Trips" That may be a hike in the woods at the nature reserve, or to a Courthouse or some state related thing. That does not mean every Monday we do that. But it allows my husband to participate, that is his day off. On Mondays she has piano lessons at 5:30. Tues we plan an art project. We may work on it for a few days. Generally, I have an idea of what we are going to do, what we need to cover and try to follow it. Somedays it just "aint" happ-ning, most days it does. Like the last poster said, if its a nice day....go fishing. I agree, be flexible and enjoy your time together.
regards
mc

I think part of making a schedule up depends on what are kids are like. My daughter picks concepts up easy and can do her schoolwork pretty much anywhere at anytime. My son is the total opposite. He gets easily distracted and likes to daydream. For him I had to create a fixed schedule, if I didn't than nothing got done.

Flexibility is key

Granted, my child is special needs (high functioning tho), but we start about 8 on good days and end whenever we need to end. If we are behind, no biggie, we move around the schedule for the next day. I use my planner as a guide, not a HAVE TO GET IT DONE manual.
We have field trips, homeschool group events and more that we schedule in as well. It is important to try to hook up with a good group so your child does have socialization and you get support. You'll find there are many, many options now.
We eat breakfast together at eight.
Then she does boardwork (copywork, a positive affirmation, prayer, Bible verse).
Then we do spelling, vocab and english. We keep lessons short (no more than 15-20 mins each).
Painting or art or music
Math
Yoga
Sign Language
Snack
free time (15 minutes)
science or health
life or social skills
lunch (half hour)
reading comp and literature (draws picture and does form report)
Out door play or PE
journal
End of day

On Fridays, we test spelling, vocab, talk about what we learned in other areas, go over her art and journal work, recite bible verse and then go on field trip or bowling with another homeschool group.

On first and third Weds of each month, we go to an enrichment day with yet another group that teaches (I teach prek/k art) music, sign language, and PE.

On Thursday mornings, she goes to Occupational Therapy.

That is our day! Hectic but fun!

Good luck!
