homeschooler not getting in to college

Postby laurielev » Fri Dec 25, 2009 3:49 pm

Having trouble getting girl into college. We have a HSed daughter. She has all the required courses, and then some. A 3.31 GPA.... (not too bad) a "top" athlete in our state in track and field..on the all state team for that, and a co-captain of her team...coaches awards etc. A self taught artist. Volunteers with a ranch that helps children with disabilities ride horses. She recently took two classes at a local community college, and got A's in both of them. The problem is her SAT...which was ridiculously low. She really stinks at math. She will be taking an SAT class again, with the hopes of scoring higher, but we do not hold out hope that her math will be that much greater. Seems like math is going to hold her back from all of her other dreams. I believe that she would have had a D-1 scholarship had it not been for her math score. In the ACT she scored in the 85th %..on the english portion..she is NOT dumb, and yet the SAT makes her feel that way. Anyone with any experience with this and what did you do? She did qualify for the NCAA sliding scale because of her GPA. Why do colleges consider math more important than any other barometer of "success?" Thanks

The modern world emphasizes math because there are a lot of skilled jobs that require it. Liberal arts majors are not in high demand, people with technical degrees are. That makes math at least equally important, if not more important.

All I can say is, work hard on the math and try to get a better score next time. This isn't really a homeschooling problem per se - [good] colleges have a certain cut-off score and if you don't meet it, you just won't be accepted no matter how stellar your other qualifications are.
