Adult Illiteracy

Postby Regina Hogsten » Mon Mar 17, 2008 6:05 pm

My mother, 72 years old is planning to teach a special needs adult how to read. This man, who is probably in his forties, maybe fifties lives in a group home and is very active in her church. He was never taught to read and would very much like to learn. In order to learn scripture, a friend reads aloud to him and he memorizes whole chapters. He already knows the letter symbols by sight, but doesn't know the sounds (yet) and recognizes a few signs. Does anyone have any suggestions about reading curriculum for adults or just something that would work well? Thanks

Take a look at Phonics Pathways:

http://www.dorbooks.com/phonics.html

It is for kindergarten through adults.
