What an experience! I have just played the Host Family to a young language learner – a Chinese girl on an English course in Ireland – and I learnt so much! She was so polite, I had to help her with a little of her grammar home work but that was it. It was amazing how much I learnt about her culture – and how much she learnt about the Irish culture too! And you could definitely see an improvement in her language skills once she left – the course (and a little of my tutoring!) did her so well! Her English was clearly good to begin with but you could see the noticeable difference was in her speaking and fluency – her confidence soared and by the end of the trip, she was chatting away at the dinner table, silencing the rest of us! To teach English really was a special experience; I am delighted to have done it! _________________ Miriam Lee |
