My sister is planning to pull my niece out of PS. My niece is in 9th grade. I homeschool my two children, 7 & 5, but have no idea really on where to begin to advise her on the best place to start for high school stuff. Any advice? How about some curriculum advice? Could you maybe offer up some of your best choices & maybe pros/cons? Thanks so much!

We pulled sd out in 9th grade too. I would stay away from Abeka, boring and the tests are not very good. We used it for English and History for 10th grade and it just dragged. If they want a text book aproach for History I would lean towards BJU. We used that for American and sd really liked that one (and she hates history). For Math we use Saxon. For Science we use Apologia and sd really likes that too. She said it is very easy to understand. We have used SOS and lifepac for some electives and they are ok but I do not think I would use them for core classes. For English I would recommend Easy Grammar plus, Jensen's Vocabulary, Jensen's Format writing or IEW, Progeny Press lit guides or Novel Units those are what we have used. Right now for 12th grade we are using Movies as Literature which is a really interesting course.

Hope that helps a little

I am new to the Homeschooling idea and I'm also think about
HSing my DS who will be going into 9th next year.
I know that I would not be capable to create his curriculum
but I'm going to put him into an Online Free HS program because
he needs the structure aspect. He has been in PS all of his
school years, this will be a big change for him but he says he
is willing to works hard. So we will see how it will go, I am a bit
afraid but am trying to stay positive.
