Need guidance on getting started with my Speech Delayed son

I guess this is the place to introduce myself. My name is Susan. I am new to homeschooling.. I have Mary Pride's Book "Complete Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling". I haven't read the whole book yet.. Honestly.. I am just getting started.. My son will be 6 towards the end of this November. I joined a local Christian Homeschooling group on Facebook. But again.. I am still new to all of this.. I haven't even picked out a curriculum..Sigh.. My dilemma is that I am still working with my son on getting his speech up to speed.. His verbal vocabulary is still very lacking.. How do I approach homeschooling at this age when he is still struggling to verbalize true words??? He is not autistic. All the Doctors and specialists we have been to recently all seem to agree that he is just simply "speech delayed".. We are doing lots of alternative brain therapies to help him with his speech delay.. I have him doing lots of heavy metal detox and some biofeedback.. We have had lots of success with that. He is a very bright young boy who is very thirsty for knowledge. I have been informally teaching him all sorts of things. But mainly concentrating on speech development and even potty training still..Sigh.

We still co-sleep with him. I am big on Attachment Parenting..As I assume that is common among homeschoolers.

I suppose I am just as thirsty for knowledge as my son is in general..as far as the subject of homeschooling and how to teach my son. I am open to all suggestions and advice..

I don't know what state you live in, but in some states, you are not required to begin homeschooling (legally) until your child is 7. I think you know exactly what your son needs right now and you are working on the most important things at this point. Curriculum and other things will come with time. You instinctively know what is best for him because he is your child........you can do things for him that he would never get in the school system.

You might want to consider joining a homeschool support group or co-op in your area so he (and you) can begin making friends with other homeschoolers. Here are a couple of links where you can find a group near you:

Congratulations on your decision to homeschool!

Thanks for your reply...

I live in Arizona. I think I read somewhere that I don't have to legally declare homeschooling until he's 8??? I could be wrong..But that is what i remember off the top of my head...

Thanks for the links... I will look at them...
