Training vowels for writing

Postby alexksj » Tue Apr 16, 2013 10:05 pm

Hi,

this is my first post in this forum. Our son is 6 and goes to first grade in elementary school in CA, but I read this forum because we are supplementing his education at home and this forum is a great resource.

He is bilingual, he speaks German with us at home and English everywhere else.

Our son is ok in reading and writing, but his biggest obstacle is writing vowels and vowel combinations such as in bear or bowl. This includes also silent "e". He gets them wrong most times, which might also be caused by the German influence, where vowels are much different. For example, in one page he writes ferst (first), citey (city), haed (had), motol (metal).
We are holding off on reading&writing German just because of this, but it doesn't seem to help much.

Is there any practice/program specifically to train writing vowels? Anything to counter such bilingual effects in English writing?

Thank you so much for your help!
Alex
