I am a college prof, and also tutor home-schoolers; I'm a classical musician & musicologist, with a minor in music theory. The best music theory software still today is Ars Nova Practica Musica. Not designed for tots, junior high through college students will do the best with this program.

great art curriculum!

This is a great place to get some really great art curriculum! I used them while I was homeschooled & now I'm a part time artist. I'm going to use this stuff for my son too.it's great for younger kids and has something for all ages.

I think whatever helps your kids learn better is great. Music theory is a tough subject to teach because it can get boring for kids. Software and apps for iPad can help liven the subject and make it more interactive.

The only real problem that I've found with most detailed music software is that it's not really designed for younger kids. The concepts are still to mathematic and esoteric for them to understand as they are presented.

Thanks for the suggestion, truettsmommy_09. I'll have to take a look at the How Great Thou Art system!

There are plenty of great options out there. Just need to have a good look around.

Music theory software can be a valuable resource for learning and applying music theory. However, usually taught lessons are most effective when used in combination with traditional methods of music education, such as ensemble playing or music composition. The combination of software and personal teaching can provide a well-rounded music theory education.
