homeschool on DVD

Hello,
I am new here. I have two girls who are 13 and 8. We plan to homeschool next school year. Both of my girls have ADHD and have had trouble, trouble, trouble in school. We changed schools but it did not help. We just can't get any cooperation. We have looked at Abeka DVD program. Are their any other DVD based programs? What are the pros and cons of using DVD based schooling? Thanks for your feedback.

We use Switched-on-Schoolhouse, which is a cd-rom program. It's for 3rd to 12th grades. If your kids have problems reading, it reads to them. My daughter has been using it for three years now, and it's fabulous for kids with focusing problems. It would be easier if you had a laptop for each child, and have them networked to your computer.

My personal experience as an educator is that, although multimedia appears to hold the attention of ADD/ADHD students, it is an illusion because their attention tends to be passive. By passive I mean it does not engage the child in critical thinking and communication of thoughts. IMO the thing that holds ADD student attention is strong interactions with a live human, which involve much much challenging and feedback.

I agree that Switched on Schoolhouse might be a good option for you. Unless you have tons of money, Abeka DVD will probably be too overwhelming for your daughters (and you).

Keep talking with them, read to them, answer their questions and help them love to learn. If they have had bad experiences with learning you might need to take a few months to help them debrief. You might take some time to visit some museums and do some fun hands on activities so they can get back the spark of wanting to learn about the world around them.

There are ton of DVD curriculum programs out there if this is what you are really looking for. Every child learns differently and needs different types of interaction and learning. You may decide to even mix in DVDs with regular text curriculum. Alot of times ADHD is helped by using variety and switching things up a bit. Using both homeschool curriculum books and DVDs in combination can really help.
