Hi all! I'm getting very excited about our plans for third grade which will start in July. We've done lifepacs for 1st and 2nd and we are going to shake things up this year!
I'm am planning to skip the whole cursive writing thing in favor of keyboarding. It seems like the better skill for learning to get thoughts out quickly. I'll probably devote enough time to cursive to make sure he can read it and sign his name and whatnot.... but definitely not the stress I suffered in 3rd grade with it. YUCK!
So is anyone else teaching typing to a 3rd grader. What do you recommend and how much time are you devoting to it?

My seven year old did "Typing Instructor for Kids" and then did "Deluxe Typing Instructor". Both are great programs. The latter is definitely for adults. After doing both programs, she can type about 20 wpm without looking. Therefore, she can still write in cursive faster. But she chooses to type all the rough drafts that she knows will have to be corrected.
typing games
There's this site http://www.pezgo.com you go there and you print out these stickers and stick them on your keyboard and then you play the browser games on the site. The games are designed for kids of different ages for the purpose of enhancing typing skills. It's all free of course. I have my kids play the games when they're bored and they want to play games and I see really good results.

There are lots of fun typing games - shoot the zombies, shoot the space ships, make your car / horse run faster, etc. Unless your kids are going to grow up to be secretaries and need 80-100 wpm, I wouldn't worry -that- much about formal instruction. I tried Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and one or two other typing programs, and none of them really stuck, but years of repetition has enabled me to type with good accuracy at 50-60 wpm, which is sufficient for my needs. In the end, it's more about -what- you type than so much -how- you type it.
