Sonlight is a great choice, especially for kids coming out of the public system. It's a different way of learning with a lot of fun, interesting reading as opposed to traditional workbooks, drills, etc. It should give them a good first taste of the homeschool paradigm. That's what we did

When I pulled my children out they were in 2nd and 4th grades. I used Sonlight to begin with and loved it. There are alot of books scheduled to be read but don't be afraid to read them aloud or skip them all together. Even though your one son has problems you could probably still combine levels. I used a level in between my kids grades and it worked fine. We loved Sonlight and it taught my kids a great love for reading. We've moved on to other curriculum but if I had it to do over again, I'd still use Sonlight. It's a great program and I loved that it was all scheduled out for me. That's a big plus especially when first starting out. Good luck on this new adventure
