Innovative Health Education Curriculum

Postby bpepper » Fri Nov 10, 2006 2:36 pm

Did you know:

•One third of U.S. cancer deaths could be prevented through diet, exercise and maintaining a healthy weight (American Cancer Society).

•About 30 percent of Ohio’s children ages 6 to 11 are overweight, compared with the national average of 16 percent (American Heart Association).

•Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for at least seven types of cancer (American Cancer Society).

Research tells us that half of all cancer deaths, as well as many other diseases are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. Unhealthy habits are most often adopted in childhood, and experts roundly agree that early health education is the best way to prevent detrimental behaviors from taking root. Road of Life: Cancer Prevention for Kids, a nonprofit organization based in Columbus, Ohio, exists to help you and your children achieve life-long health and wellness while home-schooling. With its innovative 32-lesson elementary health education curriculum, Road of Life provides parents who home-school their children with the tools they need to integrate health into their existing educational programs. The curriculum, geared toward 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, implements health education into core academic subjects. At Road of Life, we strongly believe that all children deserve a healthy future.

Our curriculum is aligned to the National Health Education standards and the Ohio Academic Content Standards. It teaches the importance of healthy nutritional habits, physical activity and tobacco prevention and is designed with parents who choose to home school their children in mind. Road of Life’s elementary health education programming is easy to implement at home because all of the necessary materials are included with the innovative curriculum.

Thanks to generous donations, Road of Life is able to make an electronic version of the curriculum available free of charge at www.roadoflife.org. All the health lessons are available for download on the Road of Life website. The curriculum was created so that each lesson stands alone and can be the only lesson from the curriculum you teach if you choose. Please visit our website to see all the available information.
