Under section 7 of the Education Act of 1996,

The parent of every child of compulsory school age, shall cause him/her to recieve efficient full time Education suitable
A) To his/her age, ability and aptitude.
B) Any special educational needs he/she may have, either by attendance at a school or otherwise.


Homeschooling is legal in all of England, so long as you cover that "full time education", which if you compare to the usual US rules, probably means around 800 hours per year. That's only 3 hours per day if you work year-round, 5 days per week.

As for the cost, it's pretty easy to find course syllabuses online that you can use, and your library will have much of the material you need. It's possible to homeschool on maybe $100-$200 per year. Short of that, there are a variety of packaged curriculums available for anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $800 or so (divide by two for pounds), which is still way cheaper than any private school.
